Hey writers, this contest is not limited as a grad award but could be a good way to earn a prize to help pay for post-secondary and build your writing portfolio.
STEPHEN LEACOCK STUDENT HUMOROUS SHORT STORY COMPETITION 2020
FIRST PRIZE – $1,000
SECOND PRIZE – $700
THIRD PRIZE – $300

Criteria for 2020 Competition

  • Entry to this contest is limited to teens in Ontario, ages 14 to 19
  • Entry will be a humorous story or humorous personal essay
  • Maximum length: 1500 words
  • Entry must have a title and be typed, double spaced on one side of the page only
  • Pages must be numbered, but no other identifying marks may appear on them
  • A title page must be included and MUST list the title of the submission, the name of the student, the name of the school attended (if applicable), its telephone number and email address
  • Three copies of each entry, plus the entry fee must be mailed to Christine Spear Contest Registrar, 8-40 Victoria Crescent, Orillia, Ontario, L3V 6N6. The fee is $5.00 per entry
  • Entries may be sent any time now but must be post marked no later than April 15, 2021. The winners will be announced around May 15, 2021.
  • The three winners will be honoured at the Meet the Authors evening, the Friday of The Leacock Gala Weekend.  There they will read their pieces and receive their monetary awards.  Two commemorative certificates shall be given each student, noting their accomplishment – one for themselves and one for their school.  In addition, each will receive a Gift Certificate towards a humour book of their choice from Manticore Books who will be onsite that evening.  They will hear excerpts from the books of the three finalists for The Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour and get to meet these and other professional authors.
