About Charlie:

Charlie Esson was born in Scotland in 1916 and immigrated to Canada when he was four. By all accounts, he was an extremely active and impulsive child who was difficult to keep indoors regardless of the weather. Later in life he would purchase over 400 acres of land in the Lake of Bays area, where he spent time camping and taught himself good forest management practices. He believed in planning for the long term, lived a lifetime demonstrating foresight and good land stewardship, and his managed wood lot was recognized as a shining example of this. Esson passed away in 1998, leaving the property to his five children. For many years, the bursary has been generously sponsored by the Esson family in memory of Charlie.
