Grae 7/8 students compete in the TLDSB 2025 Film Competition

On April 16, aspiring filmmakers participated in the 2025 Grade 7/8 Film Competition. The competition was held virtually with representation from schools from all corners of Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB).

Working in teams of two to four, students from each participating school were responsible for working through the film production process on their own, which included pre-planning/script writing, storyboard creation, filming, and editing/post production. Most schools held their own classroom/school competitions, and the successful teams from each school then moved on to the TLDSB competition.

Each participating classroom voted for their favourite films, but were also fortunate to have two current working professionals in TV/film production join as guest hosts. Luca Celebre from TSN’s Bardown and Alex Jyn-Li Carns from TSN’s The Shift generously donated their time to not only help with the judging and provide feedback to each student participating in the competition, but also gave time to talk about their individual pathways to their current roles working in the TV/film production industry, hopefully inspiring the next generation.

The quality of films in this year’s competition was exceptional, but there were a few that stood out above the rest. A huge congratulations to this year’s winner Attack of the Rat that was submitted by Cooper L and Myles M from Huntsville Public School (HPS). Congratulations are also warranted to the film Checkmate, by Sydney D and Paige D from Monck Public School (MPS) (first runner up), and Minor Dispute, a film by Cortis B and Phoenix G, also from MPS (second runner up).

Best of luck to Cooper and Myles from HPS who will be representing TLDSB at the Skills Ontario Grade 7/8 TV/Film Production Competition on May 5.
