Grade 12 information

Questions to ask when researching colleges and universities

You don’t need to know exactly what you want to study, but it’s helpful to identify at least a few you’re interested in before starting your research. Need help getting started- use these websites – Ontario Universities’ Info, Ontario Colleges and SchoolFinder to see lists of which programs are offered at which school.

Be clear on admission requirements as they vary by school and program. It’s Really important to know what target grades you should be aiming for and what courses are mandatory before you apply.

Education is an investment, this investment includes many costs such as tuition, fees, textbooks, residence, food, entertainment, clothes, etc. Make sure you are clear on all the costs.

  • How far is this university from home (and how much would it cost to get home)
  • Are there supplementary admission requirements such as an essay, interview, portfolio, or audition
  • Is residence guaranteed in the first year? When are residence applications due?

Questions to ask at an open house

The program choice is only one part of your experience . The things that happen outside of the classroom are a big part of the student experience. From the size of the city, clubs and athletics, to mental health support and other services. These are big factors that may sway your decision.

Do you want to travel on an exchange in your upper years, or spend a summer volunteering in another country? Does your program have co-op opportunities or internships? Is the co-op paid? These are all important to consider.

You might have a career in mind already, or you’re choosing your program based purely on a passion for the subject. Either way it’s helpful to know what opportunities your degree might provide for the future and if there is work in that field. Try this resource to research – Job Bank Canada.

  • What can I do to improve my chances of being admitted?
  • What’s unique about the school?
  • What’s the city like?
  • What are typical class sizes?

Ontario Secondary School Diploma requirements

New requirements

eLearning credit: students are required to earn two online learning credits to graduate from secondary school, beginning with every student who entered Grade 9 in the 2020-2021 school year.
Adult learners entering the Ontario secondary school system in 2023-2024 or later will be required to meet this graduation requirement and may opt themselves out of the requirement. The graduation requirement is intended to support students in developing familiarity and comfort with working and learning in a fully online environment, as well as developing digital literacy and other important transferable skills that will help prepare them for success after graduation and in all aspects of their lives.

To opt-out of eLearning, complete the HHS Opt-out of e-learning graduation requirement form.

Grade 9 and 10 technological education credit: beginning with students entering Grade 9 in September 2024, all students will now be required to earn a Grade 9 or 10 technological education credit as part of their OSSD. This new learning graduation requirement will expose Ontario’s students to at least one technological education course.
