On May 27, V.K. Greer Memorial Public School (VKG) staff and School Council invited the school community to a Parent Engagement Night.
The focus of the evening was on dysregulation — a term used to describe difficulty managing and responding to emotions in a typical way — and provided families with tools and resources to support their children in becoming regulated for play and learning.
Throughout the evening, students and their families participated in an information scavenger hunt, which encouraged participants to travel around various stations to learn about regulation. Stations included an occupational therapist, Stephanie Nasturzio, Trillium Lakelands District School Board mental health counsellor, Jennie Sluman, and various staff stations, including the school’s garden and running the trails. Prizes ranging from board games, ski passes, food, and a child’s kayak were awarded for those who completed the scavenger hunt.
Attendees also took part in games and art activities throughout the evening. A huge shout out to the local Lions Club for providing a free BBQ, and Emergency Services for being present to show off their vehicles and chat with families.
In addition to this night, the school has set up a parent library, containing books about child regulation and easy at-home family meals, which will be available for families to sign out in the upcoming school year.
“The night brought out families to spend time together and learn. Thank you VKG School Council for supporting staff in bringing this learning to families,” said principal Kelli Gates.
