Cooperative Education

What is cooperative education?

  • Cooperative Education (co-op) gives students the opportunity for hands on experience in a career they may choose to pursue in their future.
  • Co-op allows students to earn high school credits by integrated course curriculum with learning on a work placement.
  • A co-op placement in a skilled trade is referred to as a Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) placement.

Who can participate?

Grade 11 or 12 students in all pathways – apprenticeship, college, community, university, or workplace can participate in a 2 or 4 credit co-op placement.

Dual Credits

Dual credit logo

What are Dual Credit programs?

  • College courses offered to senior high school students in academic and trades programs.
  • Students can earn up to four optional credits through dual credits courses to help them earn their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
  • “Dual” refers to the course recorded on both the high school transcript and college transcript.
  • Students sample college work in new learning environments.

Who can participate?

  • Grade 11 or 12.
  • College capable.
  • In specialized programs including, Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM) and Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP). Students who want to explore career paths and experience college.
  • Want to explore careers and experience college.

Benefits

  • Try out college with the support of a high school teacher
  • Support a transition to college or apprenticeship programs.
  • May earn certification and support SHSM requirements.
  • Get a head start on post-secondary education.
  • Increased awareness of post-secondary pathways and careers.

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program

OYAP

What is OYAP?

  • OYAP is a school-to-work program for students to explore apprenticeship careers after they have completed Grade 10, through the cooperative education program.
  • Students can become registered apprentices and begin to work towards becoming certified journeypersons in a skilled trade while completing their secondary school diplomas.
  • OYAP participants → students in co-op placements in the skilled trades.
  • OYAP registered apprentices → students with signed registered training agreement (r.t.a.’s), who have officially started their apprenticeships.
  • OYAP Level 1 accelerated → students selected to participate in the first level of trade school while in their final year of high school. 

Who can participate?

  • Students must be at least 15 years of age (some workplaces have a minimum age requirement of 16).
  • Students must have completed 14 credits.
  • Students must be working towards the completion of all OSSD requirements.

  • Start a career in the skilled trades while still in high school.
  • Gain employability skills and a network with businesses.
  • Acquire hours and skills toward the apprenticeship.
  • Participate in a hands-on learning experience and application of classroom theory to the workplace.

Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM)

What are SHSM programs?

  • SHSM programs allow students to focus their learning on a specific sector.
  • All include specific courses, cooperative education placement, certifications, and industry specific opportunities.
  • Students graduate with a SHSM Seal and formal recognition on their OSSD.

Who can participate?

  • Students in grade 11 or 12 can begin working on SHSM components
  • Students in all pathways: apprenticeship, college, university, workplace.

Benefits

  • Explore career goals and make decisions about their future.
  • Students will customize their secondary school education to suit their interests and talents, and develop specialized knowledge and skills.
  • Take high school courses that match their interest and strengths.
  • Develop specialized knowledge and skills.
  • Gain work experience though co-op.
  • Participate in industry training that is recognized by post-secondary educational institutions and sector.

Huntsville High School SHSM information

Programs offered at Huntsville High School:

Do you have a passion for Art? Would you like to learn more about careers, such as artist, architect, cartoonist, fashion designer, graphic designer, medical illustrator, photographer, set designer and more? The Art and Culture SHSM program is for you!

Required courses

In the Arts and Culture SHSM, you are required to take four major credits that provide sector-specific knowledge and skills. The four courses must include at least one Grade 11 and one Grade 12 credit.

You will also need two other required credits, one of which is english and the other a choice of business or Canadian world studies.

And finally, you will need two cooperative education credits in an art related field.

Certifications and training

In addition to the required courses, you will complete six sector specific certifications and training. Three of these certifications are compulsory and include First Aid, CPR, and WHMIS. The other three certifications will be organized by the Guidance Department and can include options like audition preparation, customer service, working at heights, and more!

Experiential Learning

In addition to your major credits and certifications, you will also gain experience through your cooperative education course and other Reach Ahead and Experience Learning activities like trips and art shows. Do you love working with your hands and building thing? Would you like to learn more about careers such as architect, brick and stone mason, carpenter, civil engineers, electrician, heavy equipment operator, plumber, powerline technician, refrigeration and air conditioning systems mechanic, roofer and more? The Construction SHSM program is for you!

Required courses

In the Construction SHSM, you are required to take four major credits that provide sector-specific knowledge and skills. The four courses must include at least one Grade 11 and one Grade 12 credit.

You will also need need four other credits. For the apprenticeship training, college, and university pathways, the other four credits include: one in english, two in mathematics (one credit must be in Grade 12), and one in science or business studies.

For the workplace pathway, the other four credits include: two in english (one credit must be in Grade 12), one in mathematics, and one in science or business studies.

And finally, you will need two cooperative education credits in a construction related field.

Required courses

In the Health and Wellness SHSM, you are required to take four major credits that provide sector-specific knowledge and skills. The four courses must include at least one Grade 11 and one Grade 12 credit.

You will also need need three other credits. For the workplace, apprenticeship training, college, and university pathways, the other four credits include: one in english, one in mathematics, and one in science or social studies and humanities.

And finally, you will need two cooperative education credits in a health and wellness related field.

Certifications and training

In addition to the required courses, you will complete seven sector specific certifications and training. Four of these certifications are compulsory and include First Aid, CPR, Infection Control, and WHMIS. The other three certifications will be organized by the school’s Guidance Department. They can include options like taping for athletic injuries, SafeTalk, medical terminology, leadership, group dynamics, communication skills, NCCP coaching certifications, making headway concussion awareness, and more!

Experiential Learning

In addition to your major credits and certifications, you will also gain experience through your cooperative education course and other Reach Ahead and Experience Learning activities like TreeTop Trekking, U of Waterloo Kinesiology Lab Days, Nipissing U anatomy and biomechanics labs, MLSE presentation and career exploration, paramedic presentation, massage therapy, chiropractic and acupuncture presentations and demonstrations. Do you have a passion for cooking, hospitality, and tourism? Would you like to learn more about careers such as baker, chef, dietitian, event planner, food and beverage, nutritionist, and more? The Hospitality and Tourism SHSM program is for you!

In the Hospitality and Tourism SHSM, you are required to take four major credits that provide sector-specific knowledge and skills. The four courses must include at least one Grade 11 and one Grade 12 credit.

You will also need need three other credits. For the workplace, apprenticeship training, college, and university pathways, the other four credits include: one in english, one in mathematics, and one in science or business studies.

And finally, you will need two cooperative education credits in a hospitality and tourism related field.

Do you have a passion for welding and manufacturing? Would you like to learn more about careers, such as foundry worker, industrial and manufacturing engineers, millwright, tool and die maker, welder, and more? The Manufacturing SHSM program is for you!

Required courses

In the Manufacturing SHSM, you are required to take four major credits that provide sector-specific knowledge and skills. The four courses must include at least one Grade 11 and one Grade 12 credit.

You will also need need three other credits. For the apprenticeship training, college, and university pathways, the other three credits include: one in english, two in mathematics (one credit must be in Grade 12), and one in science or an additional cooperative education credit (in addition to the 2 required).

For the workplace pathway, the other three credits include: two in english (one credit must be in Grade 12), and one in mathematics.

And finally, you will need two cooperative education credits in a manufacturing related field.

Certifications and training

In addition to the required courses, you will complete six sector specific certifications and training. Three of these certifications are compulsory and include First Aid, CPR, and WHMIS. The other three certifications will be organized by the Guidance Department and can include Working At Heights, Hoisting and Rigging, and Confined Space Awareness. You will also have the opportunity to do a SMAW Flat Weld Test that gives you a weld ticket from the Canadian Welding Bureau.

Experiential Learning

In addition to your major credits and certifications, you will also gain experience through your cooperative education course and other Reach Ahead and Experience Learning activities like coaching on pipe and TIG welding, the Provincial Skills Canada Competition and Trade Show, a trip to Georgian College in Barrie and Midland, and more. Do you have a passion for mechanics and working with engines? Would you like to learn more about careers such as auto body repairer, automotive engineer, automotive service technician, heavy duty equipment technician, small engine mechanic, and more? The Transportation SHSM program is for you!

In the Transportation SHSM, you are required to take four major credits that provide sector-specific knowledge and skills. The four courses must include at least one Grade 11 and one Grade 12 credit.

You will also need need three other credits. For the workplace, apprenticeship training, college, and university pathways, the other three credits include: one in english, one in mathematics and one in science or business studies.

And finally, you will need two cooperative education credits in a transportation related field.
